Wyse Thin-Client Laptops
With the impact of the Global Financial Crisis and businesses watching their carbon footprints as well as the latest buzz surrounding Cloud Computing, Wyse's variations of Thin Terminals have cemented them in the marketplace. The Wyse X Class Mobile models boasts no hard drives and no additional internal moving parts, this gives a longer lifespan, quieter operation, slimmer design and lighter weights compared to standard laptops. Built in WiFi, Bluetooth, Card readers, USB ports, network ports and VGA Video outputs mean no standard laptop functionality is lost. Because of Wyse's initiatives into EarthSmart Computing the Wyse X Class reduces energy consumption by the device and benefits end-of-life recycling, helping organisations reduce their carbon footprint. To some of our clients that operate aged care facilities these laptops have been greatly received by nursing staff who need to perform daily rounds to residents rooms. In most cases nursing stations where the closest terminal is located can end up far from some resident rooms, the Wyse laptops enable nurses to stay wirelessly connected to their patient software while making rounds or checkups on residents. This enables greater efficiency, reduced loss of information and cuts down on the need for environmentally unfriendly use of hard copied documents. Our Clients that are frequently out of the office on the road or working between multiple sites have found a great advantage with the Wyse laptops. They can easily work from their office with the laptop like a standard PC or terminal, work out of the office with a Next-G card, access a wireless hotspot or move between multiple sites all while still accessing their applications and secured data from the server. Because no data is stored on a hard drive and is accessed via the server, the risk of data-loss through stolen or mislaid laptops is eliminated. Back in 2005 the organisation embarked on a review of computerised care systems and selected iCare Solution's e-Health record to meet the electronic documentation needs for our residential services. Additional Wyse desktop terminals were deployed over our existing thin client network to enable nursing staff to enter clinical documentation into the new electronic system. A review of the pilot identified an inability to provide access to iCare at point of care that limited the data that could be captured electronically, with many processes still recorded using paper-based systems. A trial of Wyse's X90 laptop took place late 2008 within our residential home in Bundanoon with pleasing results. The X90 sports an slim, compact and light-weight design, perfect for easy portability across a large facility. It enables staff to document a resident's care data in real time. USB connectivity means a digital camera can be attached to the laptop to download resident images or the progress of wounds directly into iCare. Staff at the home have enjoyed the benefits of recording data at point of care thus eliminating duplicated processes and reducing paper-based capturing of data. It is anticipated that wireless technology will eventually be enabled within all Warrigal Care services. - Dylan Hepworth, Care Systems Officer, Warrigal Care. |
